Helmsley Helmsley is a market town in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, on the river Rye. It lies on the A170, fourteen miles east of Thirsk across the notoriously steep Sutton Bank, which ascends the Hambleton Hills approximately midway between the two towns; it is also thirteen miles west of pickering. The Cleveland Way leads out of the town into the North York Moors. Towering over the town is its castle and other buildings. The town is associated with the Earls of Feversham whose ancestral home, Duncombe Park, was built overlooking the castle. A statue of William Duncombe, 2nd Baron Feversham stands in the town's square. |
York York is the traditional county town of Yorkshire, to which it lends its name. Traditionally the term City of York was reserved for the area within the city walls, but the modern City of York, created on April 1 1996, is much larger. |

The theme park area contains more than 100 "white knuckle" rides and slides. There are at least five shows a day and the zoo displays wildlife from all over the world. With over 1000 exotic animals of all varieties, the zoo claims to be the largest of its kind in Europe. |
North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is a heritage railway in the North Yorkshire Moors. The 18 mile line is the second longest heritage line in the UK and runs from Pickering via Levisham, Newton Dale and Goathland to Grosmont. It is the middle section of the former Whitby, Pickering and York line which was closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts. The trains run every day from the beginning of April to the end of October, plus selected dates through the winter. Trains are mostly steam hauled; however sometimes heritage diesel is used. Recently, over the summer months, steam services have extended to the seaside town of Whitby. Passenger numbers have topped 300,000 in recent years. |

Whitby Over the centuries, the town spread both inland and onto the west cliff, whilst the east cliff remains dominated by the ruins of Whitby Abbey and St Mary's Church. It is quite a distance to reach the east cliff by road, the alternative, being to climb the 199 steps, which are famed enough that many who make the climb can be heard counting on the way up. |
Heartbeat Country The show is set in the 1960's and revolves around the work of a group of police officers in the fictional Yorkshire town of Ashfordly, whose 'patch' also includes the nearby village of Aidensfield, a fictionalised version of the real-life village of Goathland in the North Yorkshire Moors, where the series is mostly filmed. |

North Yorkshire Moors National Park The area became a National Park in 1952, it covers 554 square miles of land and it is one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK. It has a population of 25,000. The list of places to visit is endless, however, we can recommend trips to Urra Moor, Rosemary Topping or Cringgle Moor, all only not far. |
